Pedro Alpuim

Pedro Alpuim is group leader in 2D Materials and Devices at INL. He works in CVD and 2D materials device fabrication. In particular, he develops graphene devices to detect biomarkers for medicine and for environmental monitoring, and transition-metal di-chalcogenides optoelectronic devices.
P. Alpuim is a professor in the Physics Department of the University of Minho. He received a PhD degree in Materials Engineering from IST Lisbon in 2003, working in amorphous silicon devices for flexible electronics. He installed a thin-film laboratory at UM focusing on the fabrication of thin-film solar cells, piezoresistive sensor arrays, and thermoelectric junctions of telluride compounds for micro-cooling and energy scavenging. He published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has h-index=24.

Peter Bøggild

Peter Bøggild received his PhD degree in low temperature solid state physics from Copenhagen University in 1998, and has since worked at the Technical University of Denmark, on areas such as nanomanipulation, carbon nanotubes, micro four point metrology, corrosion, in-situ-TEM / NEMS and sensors but has the past five years focused his research group on 2D materials research and engineering. He was appointed a full professor at DTU Nanotech in 2013.

Prof. Feng is a full professor and the head of the Chair of Molecular Functional Materials at Technische Universität Dresden. Rogério Gaspar

Rogério Gaspar, Full Professor at FFUL, has more than 30 years experience in the design and evaluation of nanoparticles and liposomes for drug (e.g. infectious diseases and cancer) and nucleic acid (cytosolic) delivery. Along his career these interests have broadened to other aspects of the nanomedicine field including the design of vectors for imaging and also understanding the cellular mechanisms that govern the action of nanomedicines. He has a long career in regulatory affairs and regulatory science both in academic, regulatory and industrial positions, at national and international levels (including European Medicines Agency, ASEAN, World Bank). He frequently participates and coordinates international activities dealing with regulatory aspects of nanomedicines (including European Science Foundation, European Commission, European Medicines Agency, European Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences – EUFEPS, CSIR – South Africa, UNECA – African initiative in Nanomedicine, National Research Agencies in Spain, Austria or Norway, among many others). He was Vice-President of the Portuguese Regulatory Agency (INFARMED) and member of EMA’s Management Board, a past Vice-Rector of the University of Lisbon (ULISBOA) and currently Vice-President of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS). Since 2017 he’s also a member of the Scientific Leadership of IBB (Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences at Técnico (IST/ULISBOA).

Inês C. Gonçalves is Principal Investigator at INEB – Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica / i3S – Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, integrating the Bioengineered Surfaces Group, and Invited Professor at FEUP and at ICBAS, teaching in BioEngineering courses.
She has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, and her research focuses on the development of biocompatible and antimicrobial graphene-based biomaterials for different biomedical applications, mainly exploring antimicrobial graphene coated catheters, and polymers and decellularized matrices reinforced with graphene based materials for cardiovascular applications (Scopus ID 7006107771; https://www.cienciavitae.pt/portal/CF12-5CD3-90A8).
Her work has been recognized with several national and international awards, including "Pulido Valente Science Prize 2006” and "Medal of Honor L'Oreal for women in science 2013".

Lifeng Liu

Lifeng Liu is currently the Leader of the Nanomaterials for Energy Storage and Conversion (NESC) group at INL. Dr. Liu focuses his research on the development of new nanostructured materials and their applications in electrochemical energy storage and conversion including water splitting, solar fuel production, lithium-/sodium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors.
Lifeng Liu has a PhD degree in Condensed Matter Physics from Chinese Academy of Sciences and did his post-doctoral work at Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics during 2007-2009. Before joining INL in 2011, Dr. Liu was a staff scientist and group leader at Max-Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics. He was the recipient of FCT Investigator Grant 2014, Young Investigator Award 2015 by the Portuguese Electrochemical Society, and the Scientist Medal 2018 by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM).

Shlomo Magdassi

Shlomo Magdassi is a professor at the Institute of Chemistry of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the Director of the Center for Functional and 3D Printing, and holds the Enrique Berman Chair in solar energy. His research focuses on micro and nanomaterials and their applications in functional inks such as printed electronics, 2D, 3D and 4D printing. He is the author of 290 publications, over 20 chapters in books, and he is the editor of 4 books.
He also has more than 80 inventions (38 US granted patents, ~300 PCT applications), which are related to applications of dispersed systems in various industries. In addition to basic scientific research he conducts industrial R&D projects with various companies, such as in solar energy, cosmetics, pharmaceutics, digital printing and printed electronics. Based on his inventions, many commercial activities evolved, which led to various licensing agreements, worldwide sales and establishing new start-up companies.

João F. Mano is a Full Professor at the Chemistry Department of University of Aveiro, Portugal, where he is directing both the Master and Doctoral Programs in Biotechnology. JFM has also an appointment as Invited Professor (classe exceptionelle, since 2014) at University of Lorraine (France), and Visiting Professor in KAIST (South Korea) - 2019. He is leading the COMPASS Research Group, from the Associate Laboratory CICECO, focusing on the use of advanced biomaterials and cells towards the progress of transdisciplinary concepts to be employed in regenerative and personalised medicine. Ikerbasque Research Professor and Scientific Vice-Director at POLYMAT (www.polymat.eu) University of the Basque Country, San Sebastian (Spain). He is the leader of the Innovative polymer group which is dedicated to Applied Polymer Chemistry. In 2011 he was awarded with a ERC consolidator grant named iPES “Innovative Polymers for Electrochemical Energy Storage”. His research interest include the synthesis of innovative polymers for energy and bioelectronics. In particular his team is developing new redox polymers, poly(ionic liquid)s, iongels and ion conducting polymer electrolytes. He is co-author of aprox. 300 scientific articles and h-index of 68. Specialized in the study of drug-membrane interactions using cell-membrane mimetic models of different dimensionalities coupled with biophysical techniques, to unveil related mechanisms of action. Current investigation includes the design and development of targeted nanostructures (lipid nanoparticles, liposomes and magnetic nanoparticles) for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, cancer and Helicobacter pylori infection.

Vitor Pereira

Vitor M. Pereira is a physicist working in quantum condensed matter theory at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he is an Assistant Professor and a founding member of the NUS Centre for Advanced 2D Materials. Comfortable with both analytical and numerical techniques, and actively collaborating with experimentalists, his work has been contributing to model and understand fundamental electronic properties of novel solid state materials, as well as the potential of new phenomena for applications. His work covers different aspects of electronic interactions, disorder, magnetism, strongly correlated phases, linear and nonlinear optical properties, spin and charge transport, and spans distinct physical systems. He made recognized seminal contributions to the theory of graphene physics related to disorder, strain-engineered electronic properties, and the new physics afforded by supercritical charged impurities. He has recently been exploring effects of electronic correlations, nonlinear optics, and new spintronic phenomena derived from nontrivial electronic topology in two-dimensional crystals and topological materials.

Eng.) is a Full Professor in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UNiversity of Helsinki, Head of the Nanomedicines and Biomedical Engineering Group, and Director of the Doctoral Program in Drug Research at the Faculty of Pharmacy, at the University of Helsinki. He is also the Director of the FinPharmaNet, Chair of Controlled Release Society Focus Group in Nanomedicine and Nanoscale Delivery, and Chairman and co-founder of Capsamedix Oy. Prof. Santos research interests include the development of nanoparticles/nanomedicines for biomedical applications. Avi Schroeder is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology where he heads the Laboratory for Targeted Drug Delivery and Personalized Medicine Technologies (https://www.schroederlab.com/ ).
Dr. Schroeder conducted his Postdoctoral studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his PhD jointly at the Hebrew and Ben Gurion Universities. Avi is the recipient of more than 30 national and international awards, including named a KAVLI Fellow, the Intel Nanotechnology-, TEVA Pharmaceuticals-, and the Wolf Foundation Krill Awards. Avi is the author of more than 50 research papers inventor of 19 patents and co-founder of several startup companies based on these discoveries. Schroeder is a member of Israel Young National Academy of Sciences, and the President of the Israel Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Mário G. Silveirinha

Mário G. Silveirinha received the Licenciado degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal, in 1998, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (with a minor in Applied Mathematics) from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2003. Currently, he is a Professor at the University of Lisbon, Portugal and a Senior Researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania during several periods in 2004-2005 and 2010-2011, and a Chercheur CNRS en Physique at the University of Montpellier in 2017.
Mário Silveirinha was the 2018 recipient of the IET Harvey Engineering Research Prize “for contributions to electrodynamics of metamaterials and its applications to microwave components and devices”. In 2020, he received an award Grant from the Simons Foundation in USA (co-PI of a Simons Collaboration in Mathematics and Physics). He is also an IEEE Fellow with the citation “for contributions to the electrodynamics of metamaterials”. He is a founding editor of the APS journal Physical Review Applied. Klaas-Jan Tielrooij joined the ICN2 in October 2018, starting the ICN2 Ultrafast Dynamics in Nanoscale Systems Group. In July 2018, he was awarded a visiting professorship at the Graduate School of Excellence “Material Science in Mainz” (Germany). Before coming to the ICN2, he was a research fellow at fellow-BIST institute ICFO in Barcelona. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) in December 2010. He was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2018.

Paula M. Vilarinho

Paula M. Vilarinho is Professor of Materials Engineering at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal, Director of the Master Course on Additive Manufacturing of the University of Aveiro and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of the European Materials Societies (FEMs).
Vilarinho served as President of the Portuguese Society of Materials (SPM), from 2013 to 2019. She was vice-president of the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM), from 2009 to 2013. She was a former President of the Portuguese Society of Microscopy (2010 to 2011). She was Coordinator (Portugal) of the Emerging Technologies Program within The University of Texas at Austin (USA) – Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) Portugal Program (Collaboratory for Emerging Technologies, CoLab), from 2013 to 2017. In addition, and within her university duties she was coordinator of the Scientific Commission of the Department of Ceramics and Glass Engineering (former Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering) of the University of Aveiro, from 2002 to 2006. Vilarinho served also as the Director of the Undergraduate Course in Ceramics and Glass Engineering of the University of Aveiro, from 1999 to 2001, and Director of the Undergraduate Course in Materials Engineering of the University of Aveiro, from 2009 to 2016.
